DIASTASIS RECTI: WHAT IT IS AND HOW PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIOTHERAPY CAN ASSIST IN RECOVERY

Diastasis recti is a condition that usually presents during pregnancy and after child birth and is quite a common condition. Diastasis recti is a separation of the abdominal muscles and connective tissue that run vertically down the midline in response to rapid stretching ie: a growing belly or a significant weight fluctuations. It can present as a visible bulge or belly “pooch”, lower back pain, poor posture, difficulty lifting objects, and some digestive challenges.

How can pelvic floor help? A physiotherapist with a special interest in pelvic floor can assess the width of your gap and determine if there is tension down your midline (or a lack of tension). They can then implement a tailored treatment plan to focus on controlled core strengthening, postural re-education, education on proper lifting technique and safe exercise techniques, myofascial release, and proper breathing exercises and techniques!

We have 3 physiotherapists on our team who are trained and able to help you out!
