INJURY PREVENTION TIPS FOR RUNNERS: STRENGTHENING EXERCISES AND TECHNIQUES

Running is an excellent way for a full body exercise, however it can lead to the risk of injuries. Common injuries seen are shin splints, runners knee, IT band injury, etc. Knowing the right strengthening and stretching exercises to perform can help reduce the risk of injury. It is always important to begin with a proper warm up and cool down. You should gradually increase your mileage and ensure you are wearing appropriate footwear! 

Strengthening Exercises for Injury Prevention

1. Core Strengthening

Including planks, bicycle crunches, russian twists

2. Lower Body Strengthening

Squats, lunges, bridges, clamshells, fire hydrants 

Stretches for Injury Prevention

  1. Calf stretch
  2. Hip flexor stretch
  3. Gluteal stretch
  4. Adductor stretch
  5. Cobra stretch
