The postpartum period brings about many changes for a mother and the earlier you receive the support for your pelvic floor the better the outcomes. However not TOO EARLY, we recommend your first postpartum pelvic floor exam after 6 weeks once you have received clearance from your OBGYN. We will discuss the many ways that pelvic floor physiotherapy can assist in the early postpartum days:
- Promoting Healing: After childbirth, your pelvic floor muscles may be stretched and weakened. Physiotherapy helps in restoring muscle tone and function, aiding in healing and recovery. It also addresses any issues with bladder or bowel control that may arise postpartum.
- Addressing Pain and Discomfort: It’s not uncommon to experience pain or discomfort in the pelvic area after delivery, especially to the perineum or during intercourse. A pelvic floor physiotherapist can offer techniques and exercises to alleviate these symptoms, promoting a more comfortable recovery.
- Supporting Optimal Function: Physiotherapy can help ensure that your pelvic floor muscles are functioning well, which can impact overall core stability and posture. This support is crucial as you adjust to the physical demands of caring for a newborn. Your therapist can also provide safe core retraining exercises to ensure you are connecting your pelvic floor with the rest of your core
- C-Section recovery: Even if you had a c-section, your body still had to carry the weight of the baby for 9 months and this takes the same toll on our pelvic floor. In addition our physiotherapists are trained to implement hands on massage and treatment techniques to the c-section scar itself
- Preventing Long-Term Issues: Proper rehabilitation can help prevent long-term problems such as pelvic organ prolapse or chronic incontinence. By addressing these issues early, you can ensure better long-term pelvic health!
