Cerebral Palsy and Physiotherapy: Strategies for Improving Mobility and Function in Children

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that affects movement, muscle tone, and coordination. During birth of infancy, CP can present due to damage on the developing brain. There is no cure for CP, however, physiotherapy plays a crucial role in managing symptoms, improving mobility, and enhancing overall quality of life for children with CP.

Physiotherapy aims to address the unique needs of each child and maximize their physical potential through targeted interventions. Physiotherapists work closely with children, families, and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive treatment plans that focus on:

1. Mobility: Physiotherapy interventions strive to improve mobility, balance, posture, and coordination in children with cerebral palsy through exercise based activities.

2. Function: sitting, standing walking are all important goals with children and families with CP. Physiotherapists always promote functional movements with the goal to translate into activities of daily living.

4. Pain Management: Most children with CP can develop pain due to muscle imbalances, tightness, joint stiffness or skeletal abnormalities. Physiotherapists address these issues and can apply modalities and techniques to minimize pain i your child.

5. Education and Support: Physiotherapists are able to provide extensive education to families with CP and advocate for other avenues of support for your child.

If your child has cerebral palsy we have physiotherapists on our team that can help support you and your child.
