What is a Registered Dietitian?
If you are looking for help with your diet, credentials do matter. A registered dietitian is a regulated healthcare professional and the trusted partner in food and nutrition. Our registered dietitians are providing evidence-based nutrition therapy that is tailored to your unique situation. They take into account your medical history, lab work, personal goals and lifestyle to develop a plan for you.
To use the title of a Registered Dietitian, they have to complete a standardized education that includes a university degree:
- Extensive Education: bachelor’s degree from an accredited university program (often a graduate degree is now required)
- Supervised Training: after graduating, a registered dietitian completes 1000+ hours in an internship program in multiple settings (usually including clinical, community and food service settings)
- National Examination: even after the supervised training and university degree they must pass a national board exam
- Ongoing Competency: with dietitians being a regulated profession they must how ongoing competency to maintain their license
When you work with a Registered Dietitian, you can be sure that you are getting a licensed expert that is highly trained in their field.

The Difference: Why Choose a Registered Dietitian over a Nutritionist?
We get this question a lot! There are so many options out there these days for your dietary needs. All registered dietitians are nutritionists but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. The difference lies in regulation, education and scope of practice.
The term “nutritionist” is largely unregulated across many places in Canada, meaning anyone can use the title regardless of their training or credentials. This can lead to guidance based on personal opinion or diet trends rather than science.
Due to being a regulated profession, the title “registered dietitian” is a legally protected credential.
