In-Home Physiotherapy Services

In-Home Physiotherapy

Have you ever heard of in-home physiotherapy or mobile physiotherapy?  In-home physiotherapy is when a registered physiotherapist comes to your home, workplace, personal care home, etc to provide physiotherapy services.  These services are not just for seniors!  We see patients of all ages with our youngest patient being just a few weeks old. This type of service is ideal for patients who are struggling to leave their home, no longer have a driver’s license, have just had surgery, don’t have access to childcare etc. Physiotherapy at home is ideal for anyone that would prefer the convenience of having someone in the comfort of your own home.  PhysiGO is committed to bringing care to where your everyday life happens.

Who Can Benefit From In-Home Physiotherapy?

The short answer: everyone!  For many people, having physiotherapy services come to you can be a total game changer.  Let’s highlight a few groups that we commonly see in our schedules.

Children and Families – Young children often get nervous when they are not in a space that is familiar to them.  Physiotherapy in your own home allows children to be in an environment where they feel more comfortable allowing for a better assessment and treatment outcomes. This often makes it easier for a whole family to be involved in the rehabilitation process and makes the child feel more at ease.

Seniors – Often as we age accessing traditional physiotherapy in a clinic becomes more challenging. In-home physiotherapy is a great alternative that allows seniors to schedule appointments at their leisure and have personalized care for that fall they are recovering from, balance they are struggling with, arthritis they are suffering from, etc. At home physiotherapy allows your physiotherapist to set up your exercise program in your space and make better recommendations as they are able to fully assess you in your everyday environment.

Post Surgical Patients – While recovering from a surgery it is often more difficult to move around and get out of your house.  We have had many patients tell us that they are stressed about their first physiotherapy appointments because they aren’t sure how they are going to get there.  Let us help you reduce that stress by coming straight to you.  We can help after any surgery including post hip and knee replacements!

Chronic Pain or Mobility Challenges – If you are struggling with mobility or chronic pain, having your physiotherapist come into your space and see what factors might be contributing often leads to more successful outcomes.  We love seeing where you sit, how you sleep and where you work.

Athletes and Fitness Enthusiasts – This is usually not the first category that comes to mind when you think of in-home physiotherapy but we do have some elite athletes that we treat regularly.  They appreciate us coming to them with their busy training schedules and spending a whole hour with them.  This allows us to get to the root of their problem and treat multiple areas effectively.

How Does In-Home Physiotherapy Work?

When your physiotherapist arrives for your appointment, they will first introduce themselves.  Next, they will find a spot to set up their treatment table for your session if they need one. Your physiotherapist will ask you many questions about you, your injury and your well-being, past medical history, and then perform a comprehensive assessment to get to the bottom of your problem.  Goals will be clearly set out and treatment will often be started on the first session as well as a couple exercises.  At the end of each session, your physiotherapist will take payment (we do direct bill!) and re-book your next session before leaving.

Every single patient we see is different and requires a different set of tools.  Some of our therapists carry treatment tables with them, some bring needles (for acupuncture and dry needling), etc. Most of the treatment in a home environment looks very similar to an in-clinic appointment.  When it comes to the exercise component we will use the equipment you have on hand to develop your program.

Top Reasons to Choose In-Home Physiotherapy Over Clinics

  1. Convenience & Time Savings – no commute time, every second with your therapist is spent receiving care
  2. Reduced stress – no arranging transportation, no sitting in traffic or waiting rooms, no worrying about exposure to illnesses, etc
  3. More Individualized care – we spend 60 minutes each session with our patients 1:1 vs in a traditional clinic setting the time with your physiotherapist is 15-30 min and they also are paying attention to 1-2 other patients at the same time
  4. Improved access – no waiting until you feel well enough to start physiotherapy, we can come to you and meet you where you are at and usually have same week appointments available

A Day in the Life of a Mobile Physiotherapist

Our physiotherapists have a very different schedule than those that work in a traditional clinic or hospital setting.  Our physiotherapists are magicians and can adapt to any situation.  Our team loves the ability to have a flexible schedule!

The first part of each team member’s day is looking through their schedule and reviewing a patient’s files.  Ideally, they can do this while sipping on a hot cup of coffee in their own home.  From there, they will pack up their tools for that day which can include a treatment table, hand sanitizer, needles, lotion, gloves, etc.  And then into the car to head out to their first patient of the day.

Our physiotherapist will often see 4-5 patients a day and that is considered a full day!  Travel time plus one hour treatments go by very quickly.  Each patient’s space and condition presents a unique challenge and our team loves to problem solve on the go in order to bring the best care directly to you. We are able to assess mobility, strength and function in your own space as well as providing hands on treatment when indicated. The best part of being at home is setting up a space for exercise and showing a patient exactly how to do it in their own environment.  Our focus is always using your home surroundings to obtain a patient’s goals.

Mobile physiotherapy is able to foster a more personal connection with the physiotherapist and the patient. By working in a patient’s personal space it allows us to gain a deeper understanding of what their daily challenges are and make better recommendations. The undivided attention for an hour is not something you would often get in a clinic or hospital setting.

No two days are the same with mobile physiotherapy. One day you help a senior citizen master the stairs, the next session is with a 18 year old athlete that just had their ACL repaired, and yet another you see a 50 year old male that is struggling with chronic pain.  Each session is different and that is what makes this such a unique care model.

At the end of each day, every physiotherapist is responsible for treatment notes, providing exercise programs and sending any emails from the day.  Some of our therapists do this between patients so they are done by the time they get home for the evening.

A mobile physiotherapist day is dynamic, extremely rewarding and very patient focused.  We have seen so many patients thrive and grow in this model and we can’t wait to meet more individuals to help.

Common Myths About In-Home Physiotherapy

Myth #1 – In-home physiotherapy is less effective than traditional in-clinic treatment.

We hear this one all the time and it’s simply not true.  We have patients of all ages that are greatly benefiting from having us come to their home.  We offer the same expertise and treatment options that you would find in-clinic.  Our physiotherapists can bring their treatment tables, needles, weights, bands, belts, etc right to your home!  There are many advantages to being in your own space including assessment of your space – stairs, furniture, desk, home gym, etc.  When we are in your environment, we can set up your exercise program exactly how you will do it with your equipment and surroundings and this tends to lead to better compliance from patients and better outcomes!

Myth #2 – We only see people with severe disabilities and injuries.

We definitely do see this population of people, however, we see so much more!  We often see busy professionals that cannot find the time to go to a clinic for treatment, a parent that doesn’t want to take their children to an appointment or a toddler that will respond better to treatment in their own space.  This is just a couple examples, however it really is a service that anyone can utilize to help with their busy schedules or just feel more comfortable and at ease.

Myth #3 You need exercise equipment in your home for in-home physiotherapy to be effective.

Trust us – you don’t need a fancy home gym for in-home physiotherapy to be effective.  Almost all treatments can be done with minimal gym equipment or using everyday items in your home.  Our physiotherapists are very creative when it comes to using your space and objects to make an effective program.  Plus, we often bring portable massage devices, exercise balls and weights if needed for your sessions.

Myth #4 In-home physiotherapy is more expensive.

Another common misconception is that in-home physiotherapy must be a lot more expensive than a traditional clinic. We do charge slightly higher rates than most clinics however, you are saving on mileage and time by having us come directly to you.  Also worth considering that we spend 60 minutes with each client 1 on 1 and normally in a clinic you only have 15-30 minutes with your physiotherapist and they often have 2-3 patients on the go at the same time. Based on the above factors we do believe that in-home physiotherapy is a more valuable option for those seeking treatment.

Myth #5 In-home physiotherapy isn’t as professional.

A lot of patients are worried that they won’t have the same quality of treatment in their home as a clinic.  However, our in-home physiotherapists have the same high standards and quality of care as any other physiotherapists in the industry.  They come equipped with all the tools to provide a highly engaging experience without compromising the quality of care.

Myth #6 In-home physiotherapy doesn’t allow for specialized services.

Many patients believe that they won’t be able to have acupuncture, dry needling or pelvic floor physiotherapy in the comfort of their homes – again this is a myth!  We bring all the tools we need to allow these services to happen.  We adapt our techniques to suit your home environment while maintaining a high standard of care.

Hopefully debunking these myths has helped you to gain a better understanding of what we can provide in the comfort of your home.

The Future of In-Home Physiotherapy

In-home physiotherapy is rapidly transforming the way we are able to access care.  Physiotherapy is becoming more convenient, personalized and effective than ever before.  As technology continues to expand, the options are becoming more numerous.  Different devices for tracking exercises and virtual consultations allow healthcare professionals to check in and track progress all while continuing to offer a high standard of care while in the home.

This shift towards in-home care isn’t just about the convenience of not having to leave your own home, but rather it’s about better outcomes.  We continue to find that patients are more comfortable in their own home and having their program tailored to every aspect of their environment is creating lasting success with their treatment. As this demand continues to expand, in-home physiotherapy will become more and more important in the context of our healthcare model to help reduce hospital admissions and let individuals take back their health.

At PhysiGO Mobile Services, we could not be more proud to be on the forefront of this revolution, delivering high-quality care and treatment right to your doorstep.  Together, we are paving a way for a future healthcare that is more accessible for all individuals regardless of their circumstances.
